The reason we start on Xylophone is to have our percussion players lean melodies with the rest of the Band. When you learn a melody you are also learning rhythms. This will be important when you transition to snare drum.
You will transition to include snare drum in Lesson 7 in beginning M.U.S.E. Book. This usually occurs around the end of October.
No. If your mallet is made of a very hard surface, it will make the xylophone louder, almost a piercing sound. If you would like a softer sound, go online or to a music store and see if you can find a pair of softer mallets. Try a duo tone mallet. Link
